The Tumilty Family Genealogical Project "NEW Homepage"

Welcome back to the newly revised Tumilty Family Genealogy Web Site. Having recently retired, I now have the time needed to update this web site which has recently moved to a new server at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Thank you for coming back.

Here, you will find records of Tumilty (Tumelty/Tumulty/Tumblety/O'Tomalty) families names, and variations of it, from around the world as well as other people who are researching these names.

Getting Started, The O'Tomalty (Tumilty) Homeland
Good day fellow members of the Tumilty clann. I understand the Tumilty name, and derivations of it, originated in Ireland, home of the clansmen. On the map which I have provided, there is an area in the north west part of Ireland, in the county Tyrone, that shows the name O'Tomalty marked as the area designated for the homeland of the O'Tomalty (Tumilty/Tumelty/Tumulty) Clann. The map was brought to America from Ireland about 1850 by the father of George H. O'Sullivan of #782 Lincoln Place, Brooklyn, NY. The map, it is said, was compiled by the Irish monks many centuries before. (Reference Toronto Star 1945)

In 1975, being of Irish heritage, I undertook the project to search for my family roots. I queried my known relatives about what they knew of their ancestors which became the basis for much of this research. The project lay dormant until June of 1993 when my wife and I went to the British Isles for a tour. It was there, by searching through all the phone books, that I discovered there are only about 200 Tumilty families listed in the UK phone directories, and this was for all the British Isles.

Now that the age of computers is at hand, I decided to use the Internet phone book to continue with my research. It was here that I quickly discovered there are only about 62 Tumilty families listed in the United States and 10 in Canada. I suddenly realized "there aint that many of us left." To put it bluntly. "Are we are a dying breed?"

You Could Be My Lost Cousin
It is for this reason I believe it is necessary for those Tumiltys of today to establish and preserve our heritage of the past and provide a legacy of knowledge for future generations. Besides that, it's really fun to find out who we are, where we came from, and who we are related to! Who knows, You could be my long lost cousin!

As luck would have it,
In November of 1998 I received an email from a Peter Tumilty, who had only been connected to the Internet for two months. As it turns out, Peter "is my long lost cousin" who lives in Liverpool UK. Through this web site, and the information from a letter from Peters great grandfather, Bernard James Tumilty who died on the Empress of Ireland in the St.Lawrence River in 1914, to my grandfather (Bernards brother), we made the connection. This connection has made all the work in developing this web site all worth while and proves the usefulness of Internet Technology. (Note below for contact reference information.)

In addition to this, Rod Smith of New Zealand has been able to establish connections, through this web site, to relatives of his family heritage in Nova Scotia Canada and in the UK, thanks to input from Peter Tumilty of Liverpool. (Note below for contact refrence information.)

Streets Named Tumilty
Another bit of trivia about the Tumilty name. Did you know there are three streets in Midwest City, Oklahoma called "Tumilty Ave., Tumilty Circle and Tumilty Terrace?" These streets were named after Howard Tumilty for his work on City Council in Midwest City. Thanks to his son, Rev. Richard Tumilty (in picture) of Grass Valley California for these photographs.
Tumilty Ave Photo 5 Tumilty Ave Photo 2 Tumilty Ave Photo 4

Like wise, there is a street in Bootle UK, north of Liverpool, called Tumilty Avenue named after a politician of Bootle in the 40's......

Thanks to Peter Tumilty, Liverpool for the above photo of Tumilty Avenue in Bootle

Anyone for starting a lobby group to have New York City changed to "Tumilty City!" We could really become a popular clan :-)

A Recent Find
While reviewing documents recently acquired from Ireland, excerpts from two books on family names, the following information was highlighted.

(From book A on Family Names by Woulfe)
"(Mac) Tumelty Mac Tomaltaigh, also O'Tomaltaigh (perhaps tomaltach, bulky). The Connacht sept of this name is now almost extinct, except in the barony of Moycarn, Co. Roscommon; there remains the sept of Oriel, especially the part of it where Cos. Monaghan, Down and Louth meet. SIF148."

(From book B on family names)
"TUMULTY
I accept Woulfe's Gaelic forms of this name viz. O'Tomaltaigh and Mac Tomaltaigh, but it can hardly be described as rare and it certainly is inaccurate to locate it in south Leinster. An analysis of birth registrations from several years shows that it is seldom found outside the Oriel country i.e. south Down, north Louth and Co. Monaghan. It appears too in the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Monaghan of 1665 (in 1663 it appeared as Tomoly) but it was not numerous enough to be listed as a principal Irish name in any barony in the "cencus" of 1659-60. Bernard Tumulty, the nineteenth century Drogheda Gaelic poet and scribe, wrote his name Brian O'Tumultaidhe."

"The name is on record also in Co. Roscommon and east Galway in the mediaeval and early modern period, where it has since strangely been corrupted to Timothy. This is probably a small sept distinct from the O'Tumultys of Oriel, deriving from Tomaltach, chief of Moylurg from 1169 to 1206. In the sixteenth century MacTumulty occurs much more frequently than O'Tumulty. In the Fiants, for example there are thirteen Macs and only three O's with this name (there are seven variations of spelling with MacTumulty) ten of those belong to the Connacht sept and the other three to Leinster counties adjacent to Connacht. Two with the Mac prefix and in the "Composition Book of Connacht" (1585) and none with O."

"Two prominent ecclesiastics of Elphin and Athlone (1284 and 1410) are mentioned in the Annals of Loch Ce; and a third appears in the state papers as Canon of Elphin in 1296. None of these has the prefix Mac. In the next century we find the O'Tumultys allied by marriage to the leading O'Kellys of Ui Maine; and Father P.K.Egan states that the name is still extant in the barony of Moycarn."

rotating NEW graphic The Car That Runs On Water As Fuel - Invention of John Tumilty (Tumulty) 1929

The Illinois State Journal has a very interesting article where they review stories from the past. This story deals with John Tumilty of Springfield Ill, where on May 8th, 1929 he claims to have invented a special fuel that uses tap water and a special chemical he invented to produce a form of gasoline that will power a gas driven automobile. Now you can read the full details of John Tumiltys invention or was it a hoax?

Update: Feb., 1, 2006
The following is an email received Feb., 1st, 2006.
Hi Tom, John Tumulty was my grandfather. The spelling Tumilty is wrong. John and Rose Tumulty of Springfield,Il. ( formerly of Lincoln,Il.) Grandpa died before I was born in '53.
I do know that they had 11 children. Their names are; Leona, Rosemary, Ed, Paul, *Violet (my mom),Virginia, *Jerry, *Micki,* Larry, *Jack, and *Joanne. (Astericks are still living.)
My grandfather was a "character". He had other "inventions". My mom and her siblings
know more. Have you talked to my Aunt Micki about this, I know she was researching her family tree years ago?

Update: Feb., 4, 2006
Tom;
I talked to my mom Friday about her dad and the gasless car. Some family members believe he may have had a legitamate invention based on carbide. Carbide pellets or tablets when added to water create an explosive gas which could possibly power a car. Carbide at the time was used in miners lamps. Grandpa was a miner.

Another invention was a parachute that deployed from the back of an airplane at landing. He submitted that idea to the government who promptly told him they had no interest in it. A few years later, as you know, it was in use.

Grandpa and his family saw very hard times through the depression. None of his ideas were ever patented.

He immigrated here at the age of 19 with a brother ( I believe ) from South Shields, England. Mom believes his family was originally from Ireland. Also, when I questioned mom about the Tumilty spelling, she informed me that Grandpa's name was originally Tumilty but he took it upon himself ( never legally ) to change it to Tumulty. Not uncommon in those days I guess.

Most of my Tumulty clan are located in Springfield, Il. I am not the geneologist of the family, I have an aunt and cousin who are. I'm forwarding what I've learned to them. Also use any of the information I've given you to "fill in the blanks"

My wife Patty and I retired to Fairhope a year ago, young retirees 52 and 50. We've started a part time home renovation business here to "keep us out of trouble".
Keep warm.
Bill

Update Feb., 5th, 2006
Tom:

The e-mail link is okay with me, however I really don't know anymore regarding the gasless car. The next time I see my uncle Jerry I'll quiz him about it. Unfortunately the older kids in the family are dead now, they would have known more. My mom was eight at the time and doesn't remember it, but she does remembers the parachute drawings grandpa made.

When grandpa came to the U.S. he started out in the West Virginia mines, then went to Chicago, then to Lincoln,Il. and finally to Springfield. Where his brother ended up I don't know, but I'll try to find out.

There is a McClernon School in Springfield named after someone in the Civil War. Is he any relation to your wife?

JACK THE RIPPER... Are We Related?

Has one of our clansmen lead a dual life?
In researching the derivations of the Tumilty name, I came across the British web site "Casebook: Jack The Ripper" Here you will find much research investigating Jack the Ripper. One of the highly suspected individuals was a person known as Dr. Francis Tumblety, who went to England from the United States during the time Jack The Ripper was plying his trade. The Casebook provides plenty of reading material, some 130 hypertext linked pages and photographs of Dr. Tumblety. It also provides newspaper articles of the day that highlight the Jack the Ripper stories as published.

This story became even more interesting to me when I remembered that I had come across, by accident, a newspaper advertisement in a Toronto paper for "Pimple Banisher" cream, by a Dr. Tumblety. As I read the Casebook, I realized it was the one and same person. As luck would have it, I had made a copy of the advertisement as shown below.
Dr. Tumblety's Add for Pimple Banisher

I found the casebook interesting reading the way the web site has layed the story out. Have a visit to the Jack The Ripper web site and draw your own conclusions. You can also used the various Internet search tools to find many more articles on Jack the Ripper that related back to Dr. Tumblety. Have fun!

Hi Tom,
I was just looking over your site on the Tumilty clan in all its forms. Good work on the research.

I noticed a little sentence in there stating you weren't able to locate any O'Tomaltys. You may have more luck with just Tomalty. According to my father, the O' was dropped many generations ago upon coming to Canada.

Some years back I was working at a government job with access to a database of all Canadians and found there were a few dozen of us across Canada anyway.

My grandmother has a distant relation who has apparently compiled a pretty decent family tree (going back quite a way from what I hear) that I keep reminding her to get to me. If/when I get that, I would gladly fill in your project, provided it's open to Tomalty's.
Let me know.

Hello Tom!
With interest and curiosity I have read the Internet sides about your family. I know that my relatives came from Ireland. My great great grandfather was irish, unfortunately we are not sure what his name was. But I took a trip to Newry in 1998 and there I found a tombstone in a graveyard with this inscription: Ihs erected by Jane of Gorahwood to the memory og her beloved husband John Tumilty who died 12. of january 1867, 75 years old.

I think this must be my relative. He had a son in Kristiansund, Norway. This is a town in the north-western part of Norway. He was engaged with my great great grandmother and the result form this relationship was my great grandfather. John had a fidei comisse in Ireland, he was probably married in Ireland, but had only daugthers. He came back to Kristiansund on his sailship about 1825? and tried to kidnap his son without success.

Our family called ourselves Tomelthy. The h in the name is put into it to make it more "important" we do so in Norway. My grandmother meant Tomelthy was without a h, and she also meant that the name was either Tumelty or Tumilty. We are the only ones i Norway using this name.

If this is of any interest, I can give you further information of my familly here in Norway.
Best regards from
