Comments: Bernard Tumilty was a stoker on the Empress Of Ireland, a ship of the Canadian Pacific Steamship Lines. He died in a shipwreck in the St. Lawrence River on the Empress Of Ireland when it was struck in the fog by the Norwegian coal carrier Storstad (6000 tons).

On May 29, 1914, at 1:55 am the Storstad slid out of dark fog and sliced a 20 foot deep hole into the right-hand side of the Empress Of Ireland, causing irreparable damage.

Within in 14 minutes of impact the Empress Of Ireland, the pride of the Canadian Pacific fleet, had sunk and with it 1,027 soules perished. People at Fathers Point, Quebec could hear the shouts of people in their dieing moments but could not rescue them for the fog.

Aboard the Empress Of Ireland were over 171 members of The Canadian Salvation Army, including the entire leadership corp and the headquarters staff. The ship sank in approximately 14 minutes

In a letter I have, (see below) Bernard writes to his brother Thomas Tumilty in Victoria saying "I may go out to Vancouver as the steam boating is better out here than at home (England) as you are under Navy discipline in the boats out of Lpool (Liverpool) all work & no liberty.... Dear Brother I am in the Empress of Ireland but I am only on for one trip as she is no good & the talent is worse, all from Scotland Rd. you know."

This was to be Bernards only voyage on the Empress Of Ireland as he wrote this letter on the night of Monday May 25, 1914. Little did he know that this would be his last voyage and letter to his brothers in Vancouver. At that time, Bernard lived at 103 Brighton Road off Colledge Rd, Crosby (Liverpool) England (Return address on letter)

It is said that Bernard Tumilty had two daughters in Liverpool England and a son, but this is not confirmed.

I have no further information on Bernard Tumilty or his family but thought this letter has always made interesting reading. It is posted here in memory of Bernard Tumilty in hopes someone will read it on the Internet and be able to follow through with their family tree and connect it to mine. (Tom George Tumilty May 7/97. Can you help?)
